Ritual Journeys with Great British Goddesses

The Cailleach

Picture
The Cailleach is the “Old Woman,” the Goddess who created the  mountains by  dropping boulders from her apron, and then used them as stepping  stones.
Scottish mountains carry  her name and portray her character.

She is the Goddess of the ancestors, of old  age and of winter.  Her place in the wheel of the year is between Samhain and Beltaine, the 1st November to the 1stMay.  Her character is depicted in icy,  fearsome winds, and harsh weather, and the Celtic people would call on her for mercy in their bid for survival in the cold climate of Northern Britain.  Her association with cruel, freezing conditions may have led to her description as a “blue faced hag.”

The Corryvreckan Whirlpool
This whirlpool effect is caused by the squeezing of the tide though the narrow Gulf of Corryvreckan between Jura
and Scarba, over humps and holes in the reef, including a rock pinnacle that rises to 29m from the surface of the sea. This was taken from a small boat that sailed from Easdale.
