Arnemetia
It is thought that the local tribe, the Corieltauvi worshipped Arnemetia long before the Romans invaded the area known now as Derbyshire. During the Roman invasion and settlement, the town of Buxton was callled Aquae Arnemetia and was large enough, and important enough, for three baths and a shrine to be built.
The only other town in Britain important enough to be given the designation "Aquae" was Aquae Sulis, the present-day Bath.
The local Celts did not worship inside buildings; that was a custom for the Romans. Instead they chose the woods and the trees as their sacred temples. A “nemeton”was a sacred grove, and it was amongst the trees of the sacred grove that the Druids invoked their Gods and Goddesses and held rituals for the local tribal people.
The name Arnemetia means, “She who dwells in front of the Sacred Grove.”

Neolithic Stone Circles in Derbyshire
Arbor Low, Derbyshire
Arbor Low comprises a bank, ditch and stone circle, in the White Peak distict. The stones are lying down, but remain in situe. The henge is said to be ceremonial, although human remains were found nearby (1901-1902). Close by is Gib Hill, a long barrow with a round barrow on top containing human cremation remains.
Nine Ladies of Stanton Moor ... and the King!
Nine millstone-grit standing stones are situated in a clearing on Stanton Moor. A few metres away is the King Stone. It is said that the ladies were turned to stone for dancing on a Sunday.
The Silver Birches are fairly recent, but grow easily in this area of limestone. They add atmosphere and grace to the surrounding countryside.
Grey Ladies, or the Nine Ladies
Once there were nine standing stones. Now there are only four. They can be found in the same area as The Hermitage, and Robin Hood's Stride.
