Ritual Journeys with Great British Goddesses

Su-lijis

Picture
Su-lijis is understood to be a Proto-Celtic name meaning “Good
Flooding One”.  The thermal waters that flowed through the opening were considered mystical, pouring from the Otherworld into our world through the “suil,” the orifice, eye or gap.  It may have been that Su-lijis guarded the gateway between realms.  It is also possible that Su-lijis may have been linked to the Norse Sun Goddess Sól.

The Romans adopted the Goddess and Latinized her name, whereby she became known as Sulis, both Sun Goddess and Goddess of the natural thermal springs of Bath.
